DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES FOR EDUCTION ANIMAL CAREGIVER:

An Animal Caregiver is responsible for the daily feeding, cleaning, attention, and exercise requirements of all animals in the education department following all USDA licensing guidelines. These animals include, but are not limited to, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, lizards, snakes, frogs, miniature horses, alpacas, sheep, chickens, ducks, parrots, and invertebrates. Included in each animal's daily care, the Animal Caregiver is responsible for monitoring all animals for health concerns and administering medication when needed. Will effectively communicate all emotional and physical conditions and needs of each animal to the Animal Care Supervisor along with any animal food or supply needs to maintain proper inventory. At times, will assist with animal presentations for various programs within the education department. Will also direct, assist, and utilize volunteer staff to further the department's mission while ensuring all protocols are followed. On a daily basis will oversee the opening and closing procedures of the department, ensuring all tasks are completed following the timeline of the department. Along with the Animal Care Supervisor, the Animal Caregiver will help develop guidelines for training, handling, and maintaining animal temperament during each animal's use in the educational programs. Will also assist the Animal Care Supervisor in implementing animal handling guidelines for Education staff along with keeping staff up to date on animal care procedures. Along with all employees, will maintain compliance with Center policies and procedures and perform all duties in accordance with established Helen Woodward Animal Center safety standards. At times, may be asked to participate in Center activities or complete other assignments to assist the Education department as required.

In addition to the duties listed above, the Center expects the following of each employee:  adheres to Center policies and procedures; works in a safe manner; acts as a role model within and outside the Center; performs duties as workload necessitates; maintains a positive and respectful attitude; communicates regularly with supervisor about department issues; demonstrates efficient time management and prioritizes workload; consistently reports to work on time prepared to perform duties of the position; meets department productivity standards; participates in Center events as needed or required; and completes other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS FOR EDUCATION ANIMAL CAREGIVER:

An ideal candidate will have experience working with and caring for all animal species listed above and is able to complete all tasks utilizing an extensive knowledge of animal care and husbandry. Previous experience overseeing animal care and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, is highly preferred. This position requires the candidate to work independently with minimal supervision so strong organizational and time management skills are highly preferred. Ability to work around animal dander, hair, shavings, hay, straw, dust, and loud vocalizations on a daily basis. A minimum of a high school diploma is preferred and the ability to safely lift 50lbs is required. 

Must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others (including co-workers, customers, volunteers and others) by sharing ideas in a constructive and positive manner; listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions from others; keeping commitments; keeping others informed of work progress, timetables and issues; and addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical business solutions.

Must demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

As this position may require occasional driving duties, must possess a valid Driver's License, complete a Driver Information Form, and provide a recent DMV Driving Record Report to be kept on file, along with proof of insurance.
