With the support of a team of professionals the Veterinarian will ensure that the highest level of care is provided to our patients.  Veterinarian will perform surgery on, treatment and diagnosis of privately owned and/or Center animals making sure to meet acceptable veterinary medical standards. May include offsite duties. Could be in adoptions medical taking care of center animals or in small animal hospital seeing privately owned animals.  Ensure overall health, treatment and diagnosis of adoption animals.  This includes proper intake screening in accordance with Center policy, regular examinations, follow up on known medical issues or needed rechecks/treatments and proper documentation of animal medical records.  Records should be complete before animals are made available to the public.  Perform all surgical functions, including prepping animals and managing after care needs.  Perform necessary surgeries and medical treatments in accordance with accepted professional standards; keep license and insurance policy current and free of complaints. Supervise, train, evaluate and discipline medical staff as needed in order to run medical area efficiently and comply with Center policy.  Create and communicate medical policies to the appropriate staff, including proper quarantine and isolation protocol as well as intake criteria.  Educate department-wide staff on pertinent medical conditions.  Discuss significant medical issues with clients.  Work within budgetary guidelines for department.  Perform humane euthanasia as needed and directed by Center policy.  Responsible for special care case recommendations, and management of medical costs in most efficient way, including outsourced veterinary cases.  Work closely with and be responsive to other department managers.  Interactions should be positive and professional manner in order to further the goals of the department, as you are all very reliant on each other to meet those goals.  Provide assistance to other Center departments with animal medical concerns or staff medical training as needed, including education, PET and Club Pet.  Provide periodic employee pet medical days as long as benefit does not interfere with adoption department needs.  Participate in Center activities as needed or required.  Maintain compliance with HWAC policies and procedures.  Perform all duties in accordance with established Center safety standards.  Participate in Center activities and events as required.  Complete other assignments as required.  Represent HWAC standards of professionalism.

In addition to the duties listed above, the Center expects the following of each employee:  adheres to HWAC policies and procedures; works in a safe manner; acts as a role model within and outside the Center; performs duties as workload necessitates; maintains a positive and respectful attitude; communicates regularly with supervisor about department issues; demonstrates efficient time management and prioritizes workload; consistently reports to work on time prepared to perform duties of the position; meets department productivity standards; participates in HWAC events as needed or required; and completes other duties as assigned.


Current CA State Licensed DVM required.    Ability to safely lift 50 lbs.  Ability to act with professionalism, courtesy, tact, and sound judgment.  Must have good written and verbal communication skills.  Ability to work and participate in both a team and self-directed environment.  Must be able to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.  Ability to take charge and react calmly and quickly in a crisis situation.  Must have basic computer skills.  Animal shelter experience preferred.
