This position is responsible for point of sale cash handling and opening/closing procedures.  Candidate must be able to work in a fast paced environment and take direction well.  Other responsibilities include keeping the Orphaned Objects production rooms and sales floor neat, clean and organized. Candidate must be able to work from a "Daily Assignments" list and have good organizational skills. Some basic merchandising skills are a plus when placing new arrivals onto the sales floor.  This position requires one to maintain a positive and respectful attitude to internal and external customers.   As a Cashier, you will work with the Manager, Assistant Manager, Lead Cashier and volunteers to lift and place furniture and move items onto the selling floor. Process donated items to prepare them for the sales floor.  Assist donors and customers in moving items to and from their vehicles.  Candidate must have good customer service skills.

In addition to the duties listed above, the Center expects the following of each employee:  adheres to HWAC policies and procedures; works in a safe manner; acts as a role model within and outside the Center; performs duties as workload necessitates; maintains a positive and respectful attitude; communicates regularly with supervisor about department issues; demonstrates efficient time management and prioritizes workload; consistently reports to work on time prepared to perform duties of the position; meets department productivity standards; participates in HWAC events as needed or required; and completes other duties as assigned.


The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of this position, but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position.  The employee must be able to perform the following tasks, among others:

Ability to provide quality customer service to both internal and external customers. Must be able to handle cash on POS and open and close the store.  Must exhibit initiative and teamwork. Ability to work weekends and holidays. Ability to safely lift up to 30 lbs.  Must possess valid California Driver's License.  Some knowledge of merchandising is a plus. 

Employee must demonstrate ability to work effectively with others (including co-workers, customers, and others) by sharing ideas in a constructive and positive manner; listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions from others; keeping commitments; keeping others informed of work progress, timetables and issues; and addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical business solutions.

Employee must demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

As this position may require occasional driving duties, employee must be at least 21 years old and possess a valid Driver's License.  Employee must complete a Driver Information Form and provide a recent DMV Driving Record Report to be kept on file, as well as proof of insurance.

Almost 100% in the resale store unless bringing merchandise to or from customer's vehicle.

Helen Woodward Animal Center is a smoke-free environment.  Smoking is not permitted in any HWAC building or vehicle.
