Part Time (Weekdays and Weekends) 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Educate people about animals and their care through a variety of programs such as onsite and offsite school classes, day camps, Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, toddler play groups and birthday parties while handling animals, managing the group, and adhering to provided curriculum. Attend to the safety and wellbeing of animals, clients, and volunteers at all times. Organize set up and cleanup of spaces utilized for programs including decorating for birthday parties. Load up vehicles with supplies and animals in carriers for offsite presentations, being mindful of weather and location restrictions, travel time, and safe driving techniques. Lead people around Helen Woodward Animal Center while maintaining group safety and focus. Complete animal care responsibilities as needed and keep current in animal care and handling techniques. Keep current in knowledge about domestic and wild animals, the natural environment and other related topics in humane education. Assist with training of staff/volunteers. Maintain excellent customer service when interacting with clients. Perform various office tasks as needed, such as determining presentation order of scheduled programs, taking payments, acquiring signed waivers or photo releases, copying documents, passing out flyers, and decorating for seasonal events. Maintain compliance with the Center's policies and procedures.  Perform all duties in accordance with established Center safety standards.  Participate in Center activities and events as required. Complete other assignments as required. Represent the Center's standards of professionalism.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of this position, but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position.  The employee must be able to perform the following tasks, among others:

Experience working with children and adults in a group setting.  Experience handling hoof stock, small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and other animals. Upbeat attitude, enthusiastic and proactive personality and a strong sense of professionalism. Knowledge of interpretive techniques, learning styles, and child development stages. Ability to use positive techniques for handling disruptive people of any age.  Ability to be flexible with unplanned changes to presentations. Valid CA driver's license and good driving record.  Ability to drive large vehicles safely.

Employee must demonstrate ability to work effectively with others (including co-workers, customers, and others) by sharing ideas in a constructive and positive manner; listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions from others; keeping commitments; keeping others informed of work progress, timetables and issues; and addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical business solutions.

Employee must demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

As this position may require driving duties, employee must possess a valid CA Driver's License.  Employee must complete a Driver Information Form and provide a recent DMV Driving Record Report to be kept on file, as well as proof of insurance; employment contingent upon the completion and acceptance of this form.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

When a physical requirement is described as rarely, it means less than 5% of the shift is spent in this activity; occasionally means 6% - 33% of the shift is spent in this activity; frequently means 34% - 66 % of the shift is spent in this activity; continuously means 67% or more time during a shift is spent in this activity.

Though work assignments may vary from day to day, this position typically requires: the ability to walk, climb and bend continuously; and sitting and standing frequently.  The daily responsibilities of this position will require the ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull up to 20 lbs. frequently.  The position also requires the ability to reach above shoulder level occasionally, and at or below shoulder level continuously.

WORK CONDITIONS:

25 % of this job is conducted indoors under normal office conditions and 75% of this job is conducted outdoors. 

Helen Woodward Animal Center is a smoke-free environment.  Smoking is not permitted in any Center building or vehicle.
