DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Assist Veterinarian in surgery, including prepping of animals, assisting with surgery and after care.  Assist in examining animals.  Provide all medical hold animals with exercise, attention, love, feeding, hygiene, and grooming requirements.  Perform routine medical procedures (vaccines, fecal exams, medication administration, etc.) in a timely fashion.  Ensure proper cleaning, wrapping and autoclaving of surgical packs.  Maintain medical paperwork and follow up as required.  Perform weekly inventory of supplies and medication and prepare and submit purchase orders in time to ensure that we do not run out of any supplies.  Do weekly health checks of all available and unavailable animals and record on their kennel log.  Keep exam room and surgery rooms clean and organized.  Responsible for management of special care cases as directed by the Animal Health Manager, in a timely fashion.  Must be available to travel off site.  Must be current on Center and department protocols related to medical assessment and acceptance of intake animals.  Must be able to make defensible, well reasoned judgment calls regarding an animal's health status while under pressure and observation by rescue, shelter and partner personnel, and to explain their intake decisions in appropriate language. Good organizational skills a must. Must maintain accurate medical paperwork and follow up as required. Must be able to drive Center vehicles, including Adoption intake vans, and keep accurate driving logs. Ability to work well with others and maintain a professional attitude and manner both onsite and offsite at all times, as this position requires frequent communication with other rescues, organizations and shelter personnel. Maintain compliance with Center policies and procedures.  Participate in Center activities and events as required.  Complete other assignments as required.  Represent Center standards of professionalism.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of this position, but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position.  The employee must be able to perform the following tasks, among others:

Some experience providing medical and surgical assistance in the animal field preferred.  Some animal handling experience in a kennel environment preferred.  Must have customer service skills and experience.  Able to safely lift up to 55 lbs. unassisted.   Able to control strong and unruly dogs, as well as handle difficult cats.  Must be able to draw blood on cats and very young kittens. Must be able to perform a full exam on an animal independently. Must have good written and verbal communication skills.  Must have good prioritizing and problem solving skills and be capable of working and participating in a team, as well as when in a self-directed environment. Ability to work closely with animal hair/dander.  Must possess professionalism, courtesy, tact, and sound judgment.  Able to work in both a team and self-directed environment.  Must have good prioritizing and problem solving skills. 

Employee must demonstrate ability to work effectively with others (including co-workers, customers, and others) by sharing ideas in a constructive and positive manner; listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions from others; keeping commitments; keeping others informed of work progress, timetables and issues; and addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical business solutions.

Employee must demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

As this position will require extensive driving duties, employee must possess a valid Driver's License and a good driving record.  Employee must complete a Driver Information Form and provide a recent DMV Driving Record Report to be kept on file, as well as proof of insurance.   

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

When a physical requirement is described as rarely, it means less than 5% of the shift is spent in this activity; occasionally means 6% - 33% of the shift is spent in this activity; frequently means 34% - 66 % of the shift is spent in this activity; continuously means 67% or more time during a shift is spent in this activity.

Though work assignments may vary from day to day, this position typically requires typing or data entry using a computer keyboard frequently; the ability to walk, climb, left and  bend frequently; and sitting and standing continuously.  The daily responsibilities of this position will require the ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull up to 55 lbs occasionally.  The position also requires the ability to reach above shoulder level frequently, and at or below shoulder level frequently.  Working around animal fur, dander and animal waste products as well as anesthetic gases and sharp objects occurs continuously.  Work assignments also have radiation exposure from x-ray equipment rarely.

WORK CONDITIONS:

25% of this job is conducted indoors under normal office conditions and 75% outdoors.
