DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Responsible for effective operation of the Adoptions Medical department to address animal health issues and maximize animal care consistent with the goals of the Center.  Ensure all veterinary assistants are trained and qualified to perform duties in accordance with all medical protocols established by the Chief Veterinarian and administrative protocols established by the Center. Provide daily management direction, goals, and objectives to the Adoptions medical staff members, reviewing issues, immediately addressing shortfalls, and helping plan for maximum performance. Ensure the department produces timely, accurate, and appropriate database, paperwork, and files documentation. Responsible for scheduling veterinary assistant shifts to cover surgery, offsite intake, onsite intake, and medical needs while simultaneously staying within budgeted hours allotted. Responsible for managing payroll hours for the veterinary assistants in the Adoptions Medical department.

Assist veterinarian in surgery: assisting with anesthetic induction, prepping of animals, assisting during surgery, and monitoring recovery. Must be able to adequately perform a dental prophylaxis and extractions if RVT. Ensure proper cleaning, wrapping, and autoclaving of surgical packs. Responsible for performing spore tests on the autoclave and maintaining record of the results. Ensure that the cleaning, maintenance, and testing of the autoclave and anesthetic machines are done as required in the appropriate time intervals. Produce quality x-rays with and without sedation. Examine animals and ensure Center protocols are followed during intake examinations.  Oversee efficient processing of animal intakes. Perform and be able to train routine medical procedures (vaccines, fecal exams, medication administration, IV catheter placement, blood/urine collection, etc.). Ensure all medical hold animals are provided exercise, attention, love, feeding, hygiene, and grooming as required. Must be able to clean animal housing, bedding, and food/water dishes.  Must be able to go offsite and perform offsite duties - primarily routine medical procedures and supervising/assisting in animal examinations related to animal intakes. Ensure an adequate inventory of supplies and medications is available and timely purchase requisitions are completed according to Center guidelines. Do bi-weekly predicted availability reports and update DAF daily. Must be able to assist other managers in the department with creating an annual budget.

Must be able to train others on offsite procedures and to go offsite if needed to facilities and perform medical exams on possible intakes in accordance with Center medical and behavioral protocols. Maintain medical paperwork and follow up as required. Acts as medical liaison between offsite team and inventory staff during offsite intakes. Ensure weekly health checks of all available and unavailable animals are completed and recorded on their kennel logs. Ensure that the exam room and surgery rooms are kept clean and organized. Must be able to be part of a rotation for the after-hours phone and be confident in knowing when to send an animal to the emergency room and when to provide advice for overnight home care.

Must be able to train and mentor veterinary assistants in their duties. Guide the daily activities of the veterinary assistants under the guidance of the Veterinarian to ensure the entire department is running smoothly. Ensure staff compliance with Center policies including departmental, personnel, and safety standards. Ensure exceptional Customer Service is provided at all levels of employee interaction. Communicate departmental needs, issues, and concerns to Veterinarian (medical) and Operations Director (administrative) in a timely manner.  Provide atmosphere of stability and support for others and promote teamwork and positive interaction inter-departmentally. Responsible for thorough training, performance evaluations, hiring, mentoring, disciplinary actions, and terminations for veterinary assistants.  Responsible for generating recommendations for improvement to support the goals of the department.  Train Adoptions non-medical staff on medical policies and procedures as necessary.  Follow safety and sanitation policies throughout facility in order to maintain Center standards of excellence. Meet deadlines for management reporting as assigned. Maintain compliance with Center policies and procedures. Participate in Center activities and events as required. Complete other assignments as required. Represent Center standards of professionalism.

Current CA state RVT license or equivalent experience working in a veterinary hospital for minimum of four years.
