Perform a variety of skilled work in all areas of facility maintenance, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, heating, and ventilation. Safely use routine and heavy duty equipment such as ( but not limited to ) power tools, forklifts, pressure vessels, 1pg tanks, etc. Participate in Center events as needed. Provide quality service in maintaining Center buildings and grounds. Clean and maintain restrooms, offices, floors, etc. Dispose of trash and recyclable materials. Perform set-up and take down of Center events and meeting facilities.  Maintain compliance with HWAC policies and procedures.  Perform all duties in accordance with established Center safety standards.  Participate in Center activities and events as required.  Complete other assignments as required.  Represent HWAC standards of professionalism.  Assignments may be modified as needed at any time.

In addition to the duties listed above, the Center expects the following of each employee:  adheres to HWAC policies and procedures; works in a safe manner; acts as a role model within and outside the Center; performs duties as workload necessitates; maintains a positive and respectful attitude; communicates regularly with supervisor about department issues; demonstrates efficient time management and prioritizes workload; consistently reports to work on time prepared to perform duties of the position; meets department productivity standards; participates in HWAC events as needed or required; and completes other duties as assigned.


The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of this position, but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position.  The employee must be able to perform the following tasks, among others:

Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds. Knowledge of methods and techniques of carpentry, plumbing, electrical and painting trades. Must be able to safely and effectively use tools and equipment used in the maintenance of buildings and grounds. Previous custodial experience. Ability to provide quality customer service to both internal and external customers. Must exhibit initiative and teamwork. Ability to work weekends and holidays. Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs. Must possess valid California Driver's License.

Employee must demonstrate ability to work effectively with others (including co-workers, customers, and others) by sharing ideas in a constructive and positive manner; listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions from others; keeping commitments; keeping others informed of work progress, timetables and issues; and addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical business solutions.

Employee must demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

As this position may require occasional driving duties, employee must possess a valid Driver's License.  Employee must complete a Driver Information Form and provide a recent DMV Driving Record Report to be kept on file, as well as proof of insurance.


When a physical requirement is described as rarely, it means less than 5% of the shift is spent in this activity; occasionally means 6% - 33% of the shift is spent in this activity; frequently means 34% - 66 % of the shift is spent in this activity; continuously means 67% or more time during a shift is spent in this activity.

Though work assignments may vary from day to day, this position typically requires: standing and walking frequently; sitting occasionally; color vision and hearing continuously; speaking frequently; driving frequently; lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying (up to 50 lbs. unassisted or 100 lbs assisted) frequently; and simple and power grasping frequently.


50 % of this job is conducted indoors under normal office conditions 50% outdoors. 

Helen Woodward Animal Center is a smoke-free environment.  Smoking is not permitted in any HWAC building or vehicle.
